Remember that the greatest gift an actor or any artist can bestow is themself, without equivocation or restraint; to themselves, their audience and their fellow actor.  The theatre is a jealous and most possessive mistress; she demands everything and in return gives you an addiction that can never be satisfied.  Many years ago I had the opportunity to speak at length with Geoffrey Rush while he was between a matinee and evening stage performance in Brisbane.  One of the things I asked him was what makes you a good actor?  He told me two things; first I learnt to say more in the pause than the written word and second and that which made the first possible, everyone else!
Unless a fellow actor steps out of the warmth of the spotlight I cannot walk into it, unless someone provides a verbal thrust how can I pare.  Without a lead there cannot be a follow and vise a versa!  If my fellow actor does not trust there would be no pause no silence for an audience to experience.  It made me realise how wrong I had always been, thinking that acting was a selfish art, in fact the opposite is true.  Hitting my mark, learning my lines, delivering my performance is not actually about me but about all of you.  It allows me the opportunity to be generous, not just to the audience, but to me because I can enjoy myself and to you because I can afford the luxury of offering some of my floorboard, my make-up, my spotlight to you a fellow performer and then, magic happens.  When you give to another onstage real magic happens.
