"Lady Windemere's Fan"
by Oscar Wilde
Directed by Jeff Watkins

Further Information & Book Audition Time:
Jeff Watkins here

A period piece. Oscar Wilde's first play written in 1892. Obsessions with with other people's business and dramas is very much alive and well to the present day! Who is the 'other woman' in Lord Windermere's life and why has she such a hold over him? All is not as it seems!

Actors must either have English accents , or sound as if they have! please contact me in the first place for information..

Lady Windermere's Fan - Character Descriptions

Lord Windermere – (20-30s but could be older) A decent man concerned about position in society as well as for his family. Deeply in love with his wife, he does also cling equally to his perceived responsibilities as master of the house to the extent it might cost him the feeling of his marriage if not the marriage itself.

Lord Darlington – (20-30s but could be older) A passionate man who does not concern himself so much with the demands of society at the expense of his desire. Society should come naturally to him but it is also something he is wary of. Lady Windemere’s heart might be a game to him or sincere.

Lord Augustus Lorton – (mature actor) Somewhat stuffy and staid in his appearance but oddly fragile as well. Need to have a real sense of joy with this actor as his character travels. Casting will depend on casting of Lady Windemere.

Mr. Dumby - (any age) The hen-pecked husband with the desire for something else but a feather to the wind of women.

Mr. Cecil Graham - (any age) Should be smug, self-centered and self-serving but so charming people hate to enjoy him as much as they do. And they do enjoy him.

Mr. Hopper – (any age) Crass. Nouveau. He is what everyone wants but can’t abide themselves for wanting. Should have an air of money but also not be so strident as the British are.

Parker, Butler – (any age) Must be able to portray dry British sense of self yet also convey thoughts and opinion to the audience about what is happening.

Mr. Hopper – (any age) Crass. Nouveau. He is what everyone wants but can’t abide themselves for wanting. Should have an air of money but also not be so strident as the British are.

Lady Windermere – (Late teens to 20s) A young woman sheltered to the point she is out of touch with her own feelings to the point she possibly is unaware they exist. She clings fiercely to family and station as that’s all she’s been taught about life. She might be naïve. She is fragile and innocent but there is a drive to her as well.

The Duchess of Berwick – Berwick (30s and above) Quick wit. Sense of style and yet oddly unself-aware. She is society. Must carry that on her as veterans wear badges. Deep voice and carriage. She can be impatient, is rarely incorrect and even more rarely right.

Lady Agatha Carlisle – (any age but casting will depend on the Duchess of Berwick) Should understand how to tell Agatha’s story through silence which is her cross, refuge and weapon when dealing with and around her mother.

Lady Stutfield – (any age)  One of the society ladies who enjoy the social season.

Lady Jedburgh – (any age) Easily impressed and quick changes in emotion. She needs a terrific or odd strong laugh.

Mrs. Cowper-Cowper – (any age) A very cautious woman.

Mrs. Erlynne – (At least mid 30s) A wise woman. She has been scarred but has transformed scandal into virtue. She is the most aware of the gifts and burdens of society. Must be good with language. It’s a highly emotional part that must be played very simply with strong emotion and simple truth.

Rosalie, Maid – (any age) Must be able to portray dry British sense of self yet also convey thoughts and opinion to the audience about what is happening.

Technical help also required - . Sound & lighting people and stage crew

Auditions will be prior to the Easter Holidays but rehearsals wont start till after.

Frog Soup explores the internal battle of ‘She’ as seen through the representation of her character traits and behaviours. We are as a whole, the sum of our parts. What if our parts, our logic, our practical side, our memories, took on a life of their own? Is our lustful side in sync with regret? Is it really Esteems fault that Independence is getting fat? This light hearted but poignant Black Comedy leads through a mine field of self mutilation and oblivious self discovery without anyone getting shot – Maybe.

THE SHOW
Inspired by the original 1936 film of the same name, this raucous musical comedy takes a tongue-in-cheek look at the hysteria caused when clean-cut kids fall prey to marijuana, leading them on a hysterical downward spiral filled with evil jazz music, sex and violence. REEFER MADNESS is a highly stylized and satirical political commentary, in the style of the Rocky Horror Show, Bat Boy and Urinetown, with all the bite and wit of South Park. You won't be able to resist the spoofy fun of Reefer Madness. The addictive and clever musical numbers range from big Broadway-style showstoppers to swing tunes like "Down at the Ol' Five and Dime" and the Vegas-style "Listen to Jesus, Jimmy," featuring J.C. Himself leading a chorus of showgirl angels. This dynamic show will go straight to your head!

Warning: this play contains simulated drug use, religious and political satire, sexual explicitness (think orgy dance scene with a goat man) and most other religious and cultural taboos. Furthermore, the costumes for this intended to be quite skimpy, therefore almost every cast member will need to be prepared to be semi nude (underwear or nude suits) on stage at some point.

AUDITION INFORMATION

Auditionees are required to prepare two musical numbers in contrasting styles, one of which should be in an upbeat rock or jazz musical style.
Please bring a CD backing track, no A Capella singing will be accepted.
Monologues will be provided on the day for reading, and auditionees will also participate in a group dance audition. Please wear loose comfortable clothing and appropriate footwear for dancing.

Due to the content of this production, only those over the age of 18 are able to audition. All ages in the character outlines below are stage ages.

We are also taking expressions of interest for the band, especially from sax, trumpet, clarinet and other woodwind and string players.

Characters
Jimmy Harper (Tenor) - A wholesome, innocent, high school teenager who runs into trouble after he is lured into the dangerous world of reefer.

Lecturer (Baritone) - A severe authority figure that warns the audience of the perils of Reefer Madness. The lecturer drives the production, frequently taking smaller parts in the various scenes played out, before returning to his podium to continue the narrative. This is a truly fantastic male role, with a completely flexible age range. While this role does sing, of premier importance is comic timing and very strong characterisation skills.

Mary (Mezzo with a good belt) - Jimmy's sweetheart, a naïve, virginal teenage girl. The very image of the wide eyed innocence and sweet as apple pie, until just one hit of the demon weed...

Jack Stone/ Jesus (Baritone/ Tenor) - The handsome and ruthless proprietor of the Reefer Den, a 30's gangster movie-type. Also plays Jesus in a vegas style/ tv evangelist intervention. Stage Age mid-30’s

Mae (Mezzo with a good belt) - An attractive, yet slightly haggard dame in her mid-30s, the hostess of the Reefer Den.

Ralph Wiley (Tenor) - A denizen of the Reefer Den, formally a fraternity man, his college days ended long ago due to his reefer habit. He is the image of the sleazy, skuzzy drug addict – mid-30s

Sally (Alto or Mezzo) - A sexy and seductive resident of the Reefer Den, she possesses the libidinous soul of Mae West combined with the rat-a-tat moxie of vintage Barbara Stanwyck. Flexible age.

Placard Girl - Throughout the play she reinforces the warnings of the Lecturer by holding large signs that clearly state the moral of what we've just seen, a la boxing ring placard ladies. Also sings and dances a number of solos in the piece. No speaking lines, but a fun character role.

Ensemble - Mixed gender group to represent Reefer Zombies, Kids at the Five-and-Dime, Jungle Orgy dancers, Angels, and patriotic background chorus in the Star-Spangled finale.

REHEARSALS: Commence August.

Auditions BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Will consist of a group dance audition followed by individual singing and acting auditions. There will be ladies and gentlemen's sessions.

Concept -

Monty Python's Spamalot is a musical comedy "lovingly ripped off from" the 1975 film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Like the film, it is a highly irreverent parody of the Arthurian Legend. Eric Idle, a member of the Monty Python team, wrote the musical's book and lyrics and collaborated with John Du Prez on the music. The original 2005 Broadway production, directed by Mike Nichols, won three Tony Awards, including the Tony Award for Best Musical of the 2004-2005 season and received 14 Tony Award nominations.

Cast Required -

14 men, 8 women, 1 Round Table, 1 Holy Grail, 7 Knights of Ni, 1 Killer Rabbit

We are looking for a cast of approx 22 performers with the quadruple threat - Singer, Actor, Dancer and lover of fun. You must be at least 15 years of age by the time of the performance.

Auditions BY APPOINTMENT ONLY. Will consist of a group dance audition followed by individual singing and acting auditions. There will be ladies' and gentlemen's sessions.

Dancing:
For the Choreography Auditions, please wear comfortable clothes that you can easily move in. Please bring appropriate dance shoes if you have them.
Make sure you bring plenty of water.
Ladies are requested to bring high heeled shoes.

Singing:
Please prepare a song of a similar style to the show. Songs other than from Spamalot are preferred. Bring a backing CD. Please ensure there are no backing vocals and that the CD works. If preferred you may bring your own accompaniest.
Choose a song that showcases your vocals and character.

Acting:
You may be asked to do a read of a short piece of script from the show. We will give you a few minutes to prepare for this.
You will also be asked to tell us your favourite joke

***ANOTHER HINT***
Read up on Monty Python and the Show.

Characters (ages are flexible for all the roles):

In the true spirit of Monty Python and in tribute to the film, where six actors played the majority of the male parts (and a few female ones), several actors will play multiple roles; the only major characters not doubling are King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake.

Probably...

  • Sir Robin/1st Sentry/1st Guard/Brother Maynard
  • Galahad/King of Swamp Castle/Black Knight
  • Lancelot/The French Taunter/Knight of Ni/Tim the Enchanter
  • Patsy/Mayor of Finland/2nd Guard
  • Bedevere/Mrs Galahad/Concorde

Possibly...

  • The Historian/Prince Herbert/Not Dead Fred/Lead Minstrel/The French Taunter's Best Friend

About the Characters (in no particular Order)

  • King Arthur: King of the Britons. Has trouble counting to three. Is very willing. Needs to have a strong singing voice and great comic timing.
  • Sir Robin: the Not-Quite-So-Brave-as-Sir-Lancelot. A less-brave knight well-versed in the world of musical theatre. Strong vocals and comic wit. Some tap dancing or soft shoe.
  • Sir Dennis Galahad: The Dashingly Handsome: Formerly Dennis Galahad, a politically active peasant. Strong vocals and comic ability.
  • Sir Lancelot: the Homicidally Brave: A near psychopathic knight...with a difference. MUST be great with character voices and accents and not afraid to show his legs.
  • Sir Bedevere: The Strangely Flatulent: A wise but smelly knight. Good vocals, some dance ability and good comedy skills.
  • Patsy: King Arthur's trusty servant/steed and constant companion. Good Vocals and funny physical mover with some tap dancing
  • Concorde: Lancelot's trusty servant/steed. Can survive an arrow to the chest.
  • Brother Maynard: Arthur's go-to guy for God.
  • Sir Bors: An unlucky victim of the Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog.
  • Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Show: That pretty much sums it up.
  • The Lady of the Lake: An aquatic diva. Part fairy, part diva and all woman. Must be able to sing effortlessly in many styles and vocal registers.
  • Not-Dead Fred: He's not dead yet. He's getting better. Okay, now he's dead. Perhaps almost not dead yet. Great dancer needed.
  • Robin's Lead Minstrel (widely called Alice by fans): Doesn't really know when to shut up.
  • The King of Swamp Castle (aka Herbert's Father): A hardhearted, money grubbing king who hates music and his gay son.
  • Prince Herbert: His son. Loves to sing, and is about as butch as Minnie Mouse. Strong vocals with good upper register.
  • French Taunter: A French soldier who enjoys taunting.
  • The Black Knight: A psychotic, "invincible" knight who will fight even after all his limbs have been cut off.
  • The Head Knight who says "Ni!": The very tall leader of the most feared cult in the land: the dreaded Knights who say "Ni!". Enjoys shrubberies. Can not stand the word "it."
  • The Other Knights who say "Ni!": Remarkably feminine voiced Knights who say "Ni!".
  • Tim the Enchanter: A Scottish sorcerer/pyromaniac.
  • Mrs. Galahad: The mother of Dennis Galahad, a politically active peasant.
  • The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog: A bloodthirsty rabbit with nasty, big, pointy teeth.
  • Swamp Castle Guards: One has trouble understanding simple concepts, one hiccups a lot
  • Two Sentries: At an unspecified castle. They enjoy talking about swallows and coconuts.
  • Historian: the Narrator.
  • The Mayor of Finland: A character who really shouldn't be in this musical.
  • The Laker Girls: The Lady of the Lake's backup dancers/cheerleaders.
  • Knights of the Round Table: They dance when e'er they're able. They do the chorus scenes.
  • Showgirls of the Round Table: They dance when e'er they're able. They do the chorus scenes, but in fewer clothes.
  • Robin's Minstrels: Enthusiastic, multi-talented group that follows the knight.
  • Lots of Other Random and Strange Characters Who Appear at Surprising Times
  • God

We are looking for a very strong ensemble of male and female performers. If you can sing and dance and know how to have fun, this may be the show for you. The ensemble are busier than in any show I have ever seen.

"Away"
by Michael Gow
directed by Vanessa Jensen

Further Information & Book Audition Time:
Vanessa Jensen email

The classic Australian Drama by Michael Gow. Directed by Vanessa Jensen

It’s Christmas 1967 and the time to re-enact the rituals of the summer holiday. Three Australian families set out separately but are driven together by a storm. At times funny and yet painfully truthful, Away exposes the comedy and tragedy of their lives. Away is usually played by a cast of 10 with everyone doubling at least once (there are 20plus characters). I would like to play it with more people and less doubling, particularly for the main characters.

Away is usually performed with 8 actors plus extras as fairies and students. All 8 play double or multiple roles.
I would like to perform it with 14 actors plus extras as fairies/students/ASMs/ props people. The first 8 would only perform their main character, the next 6 would perform multiple roles, including those of fairies, students, hotel guests (anything in italics has no lines, only action).

If I cannot cast all of the second group of actors, I will have to revert to using the main characters in multiple roles but this is not my preference.

Tom and Meg are 16/17 in the play but I would like all my actors to be over 18.

Tom – 17, thin
Roy – 40+, school principal
Meg - 17
Jim – 40+,
Meg’s Dad
Gwen – 35+, Meg’s mum, uptight
Coral – 35+,
Roy’s wife, grieving.
Harry – 40+, Tom’s Dad, English
Vic – 35+, Tom’s Mum, English
Leonie / Miss Latrobe – Any age
Rick / MC  - 25+ (also student)
Camper 1 – Male, any age (also fairy, hotel guest, student)
Camper 2  - Female, any age (also fairy, hotel guest, student)
Camper 3 - Male, any age (also fairy, hotel guest, student)
Camper 4 - Female, any age (also fairy, hotel guest, student)

Away is available in most local libraries if you wish to read it before booking an audition time. The audition will consist of readings from the script which will be handed out on the day.

To book an audition timeslot 12.30 – 1.30pm, 2 – 3pm, 3.30 – 4.30pm please email the director, Vanessa, on the above email link.
