Old Mill Theatre presents

WA Premiere of the acclaimed musical

"Falsettos"
Music & Lyrics by William Finn
Book by William Finn and James Lapine
Director : John Milson
Musical Director : Alistair Smith

Directed by the experienced and well-known John Milson with musical direction from Alistair Smith, Falsettos has been described as a production that provokes laughter and tears in equally copious amounts.

This musical follows a warring modern family in an age of liberated sexual choices and shifting social rules. It also comes with top-notch theatrical credentials, winning two Tony Awards in 1992. Finn delivers wickedly witty and sardonic lyrics, matched with energetic, heartfelt music.

Given some of the subject matter, Falsettos is for adults and not suitable for children under 12.

Falsettos focuses on Marvin, his ex-wife Trina, his psychiatrist Mendel, his son Jason and his gay lover Whizzer Brown. Despite being at odds with each other, they become fondly united in love and death.

A joyous story about the struggle between values, love and forgiveness. Falsettos touches on concepts of life, loss, relationships, alternative families and the relationships of love that develop, all set at the turn of the 1980s.

David Bowyer, Breeahn Jones, Tyler Jones, Welland Joyce, Matthew Kiely, Carolyn Latter and Sharon Wisniewski.

"Almost Oklahoma"
Written & Directed by LaVerne Kirton

There is a good blend of everything that was enjoyed in those lovely 50s Western Musicals and it all has been combined in the production of Almost Oklahoma. LaVerne Kirton, writer and director, believes she has achieved this with an interesting mix of characters - some likeable larrikins, a baddie, of course, and a couple of romances thrown in for good measure.

Sarah is the owner of the 'Windy Oaks Ranch' which she farms with the help of her two nephews, Billy and Dusty and niece Ellie. Her neighbour, Morgan Williams, owner of the Lazy B Ranch has discovered that the railroad company wants to obain a compulsive government purchase order to buy up the two ranches so they can run the rail tracks across their respective lands.

Dusty Oaks and his sidekick, Noah Count, have a secret of their own happening. Meanwhile farmhand, Dan Druffy, an obnoxious character, enamoured of Ellie, is jealous of her affection for Joe McNally. He also hates Montana, the female farm hand, and is out to cause trouble for her. Add a travelling quack medicine doctor/preacher into the mix and anything can happen.

Will Sarah and Morgan be forced to sell out to the railroad company? Is this the end of 'Windy Oaks' and the 'Lazy B'? Will true love ever run smoothly for the folks at the ranch?

Romance, jealousy, intrigue, loveable rogues, sassy women and more... take a step back in time to the days of those good, old fashioned, Western style musicals.

Featuring:
Lizzie Howard, Savannah Wood, Jayshub O'Brien, Chris Ball, Jayden Payne, Renae Makin, Stephanie Pullman, David Bain, Glen Bain, Connor Kemp, James Earnshaw, Ryan Marano, Stacey Gay and more...

Harbour Theatre presents

The 39 Steps
A comedy thriller adapted by Patrick Barlow
From the novel of John Buchan
Director : Trevor Dhu

THE 39 STEPS adapted by Patrick Barlow from John Buchan’s 1915 novel and the Alfred Hitchcock film of the same name will be HARBOUR THEATRE’S first production for 2012.

Winner of the 2007 Olivier Award and the What’s On Stage Award for “Best Comedy 2007” as well as numerous Tony Awards, the Broadway production finally closed in January 2010 after 771 performances which made it the longest running Broadway play in seven years.

Set in the 1930-40’s, the play concept calls for the entirety of the 1935 Alfred Hitchcock adventure film to be performed nearly verbatim onstage, but with a limited cast. The play follows the misadventures of our hero, Richard Hannay, played by Chris Thomas, who accidentally meets up with foul play and international espionage, accused of a murder pushing him to find the real killers and save the country. Along the way he has to deal with romantic entanglements, authorities trying to catch him and the villains planning to destroy the beloved Great Britain.

Aided by Joanna Zukowski, Sarah Cosstick, Michael Dornan, Christopher Kenworthy and Melissa Klimisch, who play every other character, including heroes, villains, men, women, children and even the occasional inanimate object, this play challenges the actors with lightning fast changes, along with the physical demands in mime and choreography required to play multiple characters at once.

Thus the serious spy story is played mainly for laughs and is full of allusions to (and puns on the titles of) other Alfred Hitchcock films, including, Rear Window, Psycho and North by Northwest.

This hilarious take on the original novel is directed by Trevor Dhu who has previously directed and choreographed West Side Story with the Mandurah Performing Art Centre to critical acclaim and features a stellar cast of actors.

Kwinana Theatre Workshop presents

"The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Towswomens Guild Dramatic Society's Production of 'MacBeth' "
by David McGilvray and Walter Zerlin Jnr
Director : Paul Treasure

Kwinana Theatre Workshop is becoming the venue for one of the most disastrous evening's entertainment in many years.

The ladies of the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society are putting on their annual production, and this year it is a certain Shakespeare play that is well known for things going wrong...  and boy, do they go wrong!

Written by David MacGillivray and Walter Zerlin, Jr. this uproarious comedy play within a play, directed by Paul Treasure introduces the housing estate ladies and their producer, Plummer, and stage manager Henry. Their startlingly original production of Macbeth should get them to the Welwyn Garden City Finals, but with the carefully mascara'd eye of adjudicator George Peach, events conspire against them.

Set in a village hall in a small country town somewhere in the south of England, the lovely ladies from Farndale do to Shakespeare's Macbeth what Macbeth does to Scotland!

The Farndale society are renowned for their legendary stage mishaps and audiences will again be keen as mustard to live their best performance, no matter what the play. In best comedic style as the play dictates, their dedication and enthusiasm is not matched by their ability. If anything possibly can go wrong it most probably will and generally does!

Director, Paul Treasure explains that this play is a hilarious parody of one of Shakespeare's most notorious play. “The play was first performed for the Edinburgh Comedy Festival, where it won first prize. Since then has been performed all over the world, and spawned a number of sequels, where the Farndale ladies take on everything from Noel Coward through to Science Fiction and even Gilbert and Sullivan. While the play uses the Scottish Play as its basis, it doesn't require a knowledge of the Shakespeare to enjoy its humour”.

Featuring:
Don Lee, Kharlee Hamel, Peter Carr, Rachael Hayter, Mel Sklenars, Penny Ramsell, Pamela Brown, Claire Ashcroft, Mark Thompson.

Stirling Players Inc presents

"Steel Magnolias"
by Robert Harling
Director : Ryan Taaffe

The action centres on Truvy's beauty parlour and the women who regularly gather there.  The story begins on the morning of Shelby's wedding to Jackson and covers events over the next three years, including Shelby's decision to have a child, despite having  type 1 diabetes and the complications that result from the decision.

There is also a glimpse of the unlikely friendship between Clairee and Ouiser; Annelle's transformation from a shy, anxious newcomer in town to a good-time girl and then to a revival-tent Christian; and Truvy's relationships with the men in her family.

Although the main storyline involves Shelby, her mother and Shelby's medical battles, the underlying group-friendship among all six women is prominent throughout the drama.

There was a film of Steel  Magnolias in 1989 starring Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Dolly Parton, Darryl Hannah and Julia Roberts.  The story is based on the death of Robert Harling’s sister, Susan Harling Robinson, a diabetic.  As her best friend and oldest sibling, Harley found it difficult to cope with her death and wrote what began as a short story, but evolved into a full length play.
