South West Blues Club Inc. proudly presents

KNiKi & Mike Beale at South West Blues Club - Bunbury

South West Blues Club presents

KNiKi
with Mike Beale
(Men in Blues - Qld)

Friday 5 March 2010

Hot on the Heels of a sellout show with CHAIN the South west Blues Club launches into action again with a West Australian Blues Showcase – featuring Bunbury born KNiKi and Band with special guest Mike Beale from ‘Men in Blues’ and first up on the night blues club house band and South West blues stalwarts Home Brew.

KNiKi arrived in the world somewhere near Bunbury, Western Australia. Delivered by her father, she was born blue and raised in Perth. Her love of music was spiked at the age of fourteen when she started singing lessons with a small local music academy. KNiKi’s signature sound is hauntingly powerful. Constantly seeking to expand her impressive vocal range, KNiKi’s original music is expansive and thought provoking as she takes her listeners on a journey of contemplation and self-discovery.

It was just a chance email early in 2009 that introduced Perth based blues singer KNiKi with Gold Coast based guitarist/frontman of Men in Blues fame Mike Beale. Since then the two have had an amazing musical collaboration.

The combination of Mike’s shredding blues vocal and explosive guitar, with KNiKi’s powerful, soulful and yet expressive voice has left crowds desperate for more. KNiKi’s second album JUST was released in August 2008 at the Perth Blues Club, backed by John Meyer’s Blues Express Band. Currently, KNiKi and Meyer are writing KNiKi’s third Blues album yet to be titled. More at: www.kniki.com

Perth Medieval Fayre

Saturday 20 March - 10am to 5pm
Supreme Court Gardens
cnr Barrack St & Riverside Drive, Perth

Entry $5 or $3 conc or in costume

The WA Medieval Alliance, the gateway to medieval groups and likeminded folk in Western Australia, proudly presents their annual Medieval Fayre at the Perth Supreme Court Gardens on Saturday 20 March.

Each year, the fayre is held suitably close to All Fools Day, a folk celebration that began to appear in Europe in the late Middle Ages.

A plethora of Perth’s medieval clubs will be on display showing off their various talents including historical European swordsmanship, dark ages combat, renaissance fencing and swashbuckling.

The fayre is rich with traditions, full of exciting and thrilling misadventures, storytellers and tales, all set in a time where chivalry, grace and courtesy were a part of everyday life.

Wondrous and diverse entertainment, fun, frolic and folly will be the order of the day. Join with the nobles, serfs, Vikings, Saxons, Celts, Knights and Ladies that will grace our lively city.

A grand parade will travel through the fayre grounds, delighting all with dancers, merchants, minstrels and everything medieval.

President of the WA Medieval Alliance, Steve Osborne says “Each year the fayre enjoys a healthy growth in both participation and patronage. It’s more fun than the black death, less strenuous than the crusades."

The Medieval Fayre welcomes all individuals and families from pre 16th century or the present day. Dressing to the medieval theme is highly encouraged, however not mandatory.

Entry is affordable for one and all at only $5 and $3 for concession and for those in costume. Children under 13 are free. Mystical and upbeat music along with colourful, creative medieval characters will adorn the gardens commencing from 10am and concluding at 5pm.

Stray Cats Theatre Company presents

"Disney's High School Musical"

Directed by Karen Francis
Choreography: Lucy Green & Jason Arrow
Vocal Direction: Meagan Crowe

This all-Australian production with its strong cast (featuring some of the states hottest young singers and dancers and a pumping live band) is an event that will have everyone talking.

HMS- Live on Stage! follows the story of basketball captain Troy and the brainy but shy Gabriella who discovers they have a secret passion for singing. When they decide to audition for the student musical it sends shockwaves through the High School's rigid social cliques. Troy's basketball team, Gabriella's fellow science clubbers, even the drama regulars, do all they can to keep the pair apart and off-stage. When Troy and Gabriella defy their friends and family they inadvertently inspire the other students to go public with their own secret talents and dreams.

Stray Cats Theatre Company’s production of High School Musical is a teenage love story. Troy (Jason Arrow) and Gabriella (Ali Hill) meet on a karaoke stage one night while on vacation. Despite the song they sang together, they would probably have never seen each other again. Gabriella’s mom gets transferred, however, and she coincidentally ends up going to the same high school as Troy.

While the two are happy to see each other again, things are a lot different when they are confined by the rigid social structure of high school. Gabriella, known in her last school as a “math geek,” does not seem to fit into Troy’s world of jocks and cheerleaders. The two cause mayhem when they act on their secret desire to try out for the lead parts in the high school musical. With Carris Read as Sharpay and Matt Sheehy as Ryan we have the head of the drama club desperately trying to block the obviously talented Troy and Gabriella, they are backed by their threatened peers to stay with the status Quo, but gradually others decide to come out and be themselves.

With a very talented cast and a fun story for all ages, High School Musical has been a huge hit, so don’t miss your chance to catch this high energy production. This production has been proudly supported by Drug Aware, Mandurah Shire Council, Peet and Co Lakelands, and Koorliny Arts Centre.

"Deckchairs"

directed by Peter Kirkwood

Harbour Theatre’s first production for 2010 in their new premises is Deckchairs.

Written by a woman, to be performed by women, “Deckchairs” is full of life and vitality that will appeal to everyone. Set by the seaside these four plays take a humourous, poignant and often compassionate look, at the many facets of modern life and relationships. The well defined, interesting characters are colourful, animated but above all truthful.

Performed by four extremely talented actresses Sue Lynch of Bullcreek, Ann Speicher of Mosman Park, Nicola Bond and Joan Scafe both of Applecross, Deckchairs is a production that will touch your emotions and should not be missed.

Follow the adventures of Marion and Deborah as they discuss their unusual sisterhood, Pascaline and Maggie as they compete in a theatrical battle of wits, Miss Westlake and Julia as they discuss their shared past and finally, Beryl and Doris on their absolutely hilarious work’s outing.

Award winning director Peter Kirkwood says “these plays, delicately observing life, are full of colourful and animated characters – sometimes humorous, sometimes touching.”
Kirkwood adds: “I have chosen a cast of four well-known and talented actors to portray the eight characters needed.  They have the challenge of not just portraying a different character in each play but to make each character totally believeable.  They are succeeding admirably.”

“Members of Harbour Theatre have spent most of the Festive season relocating the theatre.  Creating an intimate theatre space inside a cinema is no mean feat and this has been completed successfully by the hard work of many Harbour Theatre volunteers.  I am honoured to have been selected to present the first play at these new premises”

* NEW VENUE:

Harbour Theatre is in the Port Cineaste Building, 70 Adelaide Street, Fremantle (opposite Woolworths).  There is plenty of parking nearby.

· For more information, contact the director

For a really great night out, have a meal at Clancy’s Fish Pub
before the show (it’s just a short walk across the park from the theatre).

"Away"

written by Michael Gow

Away opens with a school performance of A Midsummer Night's Dream. Shakespearean themes of suffering and reconciliation persist as three families on separate holidays are drawn together by a storm. At times funny and yet painfully truthful, Away expresses the comedy and tragedy of their lives.

Thursday, 18 March at 4pm and Friday, 19 March at 7.30pm in the performing arts centre.

Away is a play by the Australian playwright Michael Gow.
First performed by the Griffin Theatre Company in 1986, it tells the story of three internally-conflicted families holidaying on the coast for Christmas, 1968.

It has become one of the most widely produced Australian plays of all time and is part of the Higher School Certificate syllabi or general High School Curriculum in many states, including Western Australia, New South Wales, Brisbane and Victoria.

"A Funny Thing Happened
On The Way To The Forum"

Directed by Lars Jensen
Musical Director: David Hardie
Choreographer: Rachel Leonhardt

Inspired by the farces of the ancient Roman playwright Plautus (251-183BC) this tells the story of the slave Pseudolus who attempts to win his freedom by helping his young master Hero to win the ‘girl of his dreams’, Philia, who just happens to be one of the courtesans living in the house next door and who is already promised to Miles Gloriosus, a renowned warrior in the Roman army! Senex and Domina, Hero’s parents go on a trip and so the plot is hatched! However the best laid plans etc etc and this sets the scene for much misunderstanding and hilarity for the audience. There is also a twist in the tale.

The plot displays all the elements of a classic farce including puns, much coming in and out of doors, mistaken identity and satirical comments on social class. The title derives from the line often used by vaudeville comedians in Music Hall shows of years past: “A funny thing happened on the way to the theatre”

Originally produced on Broadway in 1962 the show won several Tony Awards and has since enjoyed many revivals, notable in London’s West End in 1963  at the Strand Theatre where Frankie Howerd played Pseudolus. The latest production was at the Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario in 2009 and there has even been a Cantonese version played in Hong Kong in March 2009.  The film version, in 1996 starred Zero Mostel reprising his Broadway role as Pseudolus.

Lars (Blood Brothers, A Chorus Line) has rounded up a cast of regulars and newcomers to Melville for this very funny musical, so we suggest you book early to avoid disappointment. David Hardie has joined us as MD

Featuring: Ross Bryant as Pseudolus, with Phil Mackenzie & Diana Ryman as Senex & Domina, Morgan Phillips as Hero, Craig Menner as Miles Gloriosus, Kimberley Harris as Philia with Emmet Nichols, Harry Lenthall, Judith Clark, Niquelle May, Barbara Lovell, Tarryn Bullock, Vicki Kirkman, Stuart Riches, Andrew Milne, Jeff Hansen &  Warren McGrath.

"Dangerous Liaisons"

Directed by Karen Francis

Lust. Seduction. Revenge. The Game As You've Never Seen It Played Before. Rich and bored aristocrats in Rococo France play high-stakes games of passion and betrayal. Set in Rococco France, a scheming widow and her ex-lover make a bet regarding the corruption of a recently married woman. The ex-lover, Valmont, bets that he can seduce her, even though she is an honorable woman. If he wins, he can have his lover to do as he will.

You may remember the film which starred Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer. This drama is set in Paris just prior to the French Revolution when the idle rich had everything their own way. The play weaves an intricate and passionate path of two cruel, cunning, conniving characters bent on tearing apart society through various sexual exploits and dirty, deceitful, devilish deeds. This was their way of filling in the empty hours.

The cast is hard at work mastering the beautiful dialogue and gracious manners of that era. Please be warned that sexual themes and nudity feature in this production.

There is an exciting sword fence in this play between Tom and Philip. They have had expert tuition from Andy Fraser the Master Stage Combat Instructor who works with the professional theatres in Perth.

Dangerous Liaisons does contain adult content; audience members must be 16+

Featuring:
Vicomte de Valmont - Tom Hennessy
Marquise de Merteuil - Diana Oliver
Madame de Tourvel - Sky Ogier
Cécile de Volanges - Nikkita Dixon
Le Chevalier Raphael Danceny - Philip Hutton
Emilie - Rachel Loftus
Madame de Rosemonde - Beryl Francis
Madame de Volanges - Corinne Thorneycroft
Azolan - Matt Sheehy
Julie - Dee Crosthwaithe
Major Domo - Ian Butcher
Servant - Amy Honor Elliott

If you are unsure what this show may be about...Cruel Intentions is the modern day version of this play. Dangerous Liaisons is set the year before the French Revolution.

"Female Transport"

Directed by Hywel Williams

This is the dramatized story of six women convicts transported from England to Australia at the beginning of the 19th century. The Sydney Cove set sail in 1807 on the six month journey and this recounts the determination of six of the women, whose story this is, to survive against the conditions below decks and the indifference, brutality and treatment considered ‘appropriate’ for criminals in ‘those days’.

Survive they do with wit, determination and sheer cunning, against the system which treats them as less than human, There’s the Captain for whom this is a commercial venture, the Sergeant who is determined to make them obey, the cabin-boy who doesn’t know which attitude to adopt and the Surgeon, who tries his best to see that the women are treated reasonably.

Although classified as a drama there are plenty of lighter moments and much earthy humour as the six women determine to get the better of their captors.

Hywel first directed this production in 2005 at Phoenix Theatre in Hamilton Hill where it was very well received. He has wanted to reprise the play ever since and so we are delighted to present it to you at the Old Mill Theatre for your enjoyment.

Featuring
Kirstie Francis, Kyla Jones, Melissa Kiiveri, Jocelyn O’Neil, Kate O’Sullivan, Ariel Simone, Damien Nott, Phil Barnett, Adam Dear and Tim Prosser.

"Lords and Ladies"

Based on Terry Pratchett’s fantasy novel
Adapted for the stage by Irana Brown and Simon James
Directed by Christine Ellis

The Stirling Players will reign in the new theatre season by presenting to audiences Simon James and Irana Brown's play adaptation of the much-loved Terry Pratchett story, Lords and Ladies.

In the mountain kingdom of Lancre, three witches return home from a broomstick tour of Discworld to find the elves are back and there is a very real threat of the entire Disc being destroyed.

Granny Weatherwax and her tiny coven must do battle with the elves who threaten to take control with their hypnotic glamour.

A comedic adventure of witches, wizards, romantic interludes, a royal wedding, strange crop circles, even stranger Morris dancers, and the biggest threat Discworld has ever faced . . . Elves!

With a cast of over thirty, this play with music is expected by the Stirling Players to be an impressive start to the new year.

Christine Ellis, well known for her extravagant productions with the Stirling Players, has proven once again that her directing abilities have hit the mark with Lords and Ladies.

Says Ellis of the production, "I can appreciate how many die-hard Pratchett fans there are, even in Perth, and I'm really aiming to produce a play that appeals to the general public, but also to the readers of the books.

"I was blown away by the talent at the auditions, and am thrilled that a majority of the cast are also Pratchett fans; it creates an energy you can really see in their performances on stage."

Playlovers presents

"The Pillowman"

by Martin McDonagh
directed by Matt Longman

Playlovers are proud to present the darkest comedy of all time, award winning ‘The Pillowman’ by Martin McDonagh.  Directed by the well known theatre talent Matt Longman.

Martin McDonagh has been called “one of the theatrical luminaries of the 21st century” (The New Republic). While still in his twenties, the Anglo-Irish playwright filled houses in New York and London, was showered with the theatre world’s most prestigious accolades, and electrified audiences with his cunningly crafted and outrageous tragicomedies.

His latest drama, The Pillowman, continues this trajectory, winning the 2004 Olivier Award for Best Play.  With echoes of Stoppard, Kafka, and the Brothers Grimm, The Pillowman centres on a writer in an unnamed totalitarian state who is being interrogated about the gruesome content of his short stories and their similarities to a series of child murders.

The result is an urgent work of theatrical bravura-an unflinching examination of the very nature and purpose of art that is sure to “be staged for generations to come."

This multi award-winning play is challenging with a surprising blend of pathos and high comedy.

“Energizing…A blindingly bright black comedy… [what makes] the unsettling and exhilarating new play from Mr. McDonagh…so gripping as theater is how narrative art becomes the play’s and the characters very life blood.” -Ben Brantley, The New York Times

“A complex tale about life and art, about fact and illusion, about politics, society, cruelty and creativity.” -Alastair Macauley, Financial Times

“McDonagh’s least forgiving, bravest play.” -Matt Wolf, Variety

WARNING - Coarse Language, violence and disturbing subject matter.

Features: Michael Hogden, Phillip Barnett, David Bowyer, David Young, Marie Corrigan,
Rodney Worth, Jessica Mews and Callum Fletcher

Art is a comedy that looks at the cataclysmic effect on three friends, Serge (Tim Sadleir), Marc (David Holle) and Yvan (Stuart Fleming) when Serge purchases an expensive work of abstract art - a large painting consisting of white lines on a white canvas.

As the three men engage in an ongoing debate over the value of the painting, emotions run high and the conflict escalates to the point of nearly destroying their longstanding friendship.

Art opens on Friday, 12 March 2010, for a three week season. Tickets are now on sale from the Goldfields Arts Centre. $20 Adults, $15 GRC Members and Concession. Call the Box Office on 9088 6900 between 10am and 3pm, Monday to Friday, to ensure you don't miss out!

Melville Theatre presents

"A Funny Thing Happened
On The Way To The Forum "

Book by Bert Shevelove & Kurt Gelbart.
Directed by Lars Jensen, MD David Hardie
Choreography by Rachel Leonhardt.

David Young Productions presents
The Australian Premiere
Pulitzer Prize Nominee

"Second Samuel"

written by Pamela Parker
directed by Susan Hayward

David Young Productions is proud to present the southern American comedy Second Samuel, written by Pulitzer Prize nominee, Pamela Parker. The international premiere season, directed by Susan Hayward, will open at the Subiaco Arts Centre on April 29.

Set in the late 1940s, the people in the sleepy rural town of Second Samuel are preparing for the funeral of one of their most beloved citizens. But their serenity is suddenly shattered when dark secrets are revealed, making townfolk in for a summer no one will ever forget.

Second Samuel is a small town in Georgia, rebuilt after General Sherman burned the first one. It’s where the men spend their leisure time at the local watering hole and the women are found gossiping at the local hair and beauty emporium.

American guest artist, Kansas-born Nat Martin, will feature and reprise his role as Ulysses Simpson, known as “US”. Martin has performed “US” since 1987 throughout the United States both locally, regionally and on national tours and this will be his first tour overseas.

Martin’s biog is impressive as he describes his career as a great theatrical adventure of make-believe. Having professionally performed in the musical Camelot, Little Shop of Horrors, Ragtime the Musical, A Lesson Before Dying, three productions of Driving Miss Daisy and written music and lyrics for Tallulah and Hattie: Dead at the Pearly Gate Café, another production written by Parker. Martin’s cv also lists film and television credits including In The Heat of the Night for MGM.

“Plugging into a show with new performers, in a new space and in another country will be a fun and exciting challenge,” Martin said.

This touching Southern comedy is about family, diversity and strength with a unique blend of charm, wit and humour. Second Samuel is a journey of discovery and the message comes home that it is okay to be different.

Second Samuel has received rave reviews from American theatre critics, been on three national tours, countless high school and community theatre productions, sold out every performance at South Carolina’s Spoleto International Arts Festival, been off Broadway, has been produced at Virginia’s historic Barter Theatre, and named best original script by the Atlanta Journal Constitution newspaper.

Atlanta playwright Pamela Parker, who has been nominated twice for the Pulitzer literary honour, approached well-known Perth director Susan Hayward through internet theatre forums and, after great discussion, logistical planning securing actor Nat Martin, the 2010 production was born. Parker will also make her way to Perth for the international premiere season.

When describing how she became a playwright, Parker said: “I was always reading books and then developed a love of theatre but not a clear idea of what I wanted to do. I was a good stage and house manager. I liked lighting and sound. Acting was okay but I didn’t like being ill before going on stage.

“I enjoyed theatre but I couldn’t find my niche. I tried everything but nothing felt right. Writing a play never crossed my mind, until one day someone told me I couldn’t. So the challenge was set and I haven’t looked back.”

Director Susan Hayward has produced some highly memorable productions over recent years including The Vagina Monologues, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The One Day of the Year and Round and Round the Garden.  Hayward is also looking forward to directing Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf later in the year for Playlovers.

When asked why stage Second Samuel, director Susan Hayward responds enthusiastically. “How could I not be doing Second Samuel?” she said. “Quite apart from the delightful quirky story, how often does a little old director in community and independent theatre get a chance like this?

“It would be big news in professional theatre if an established actor – well-known enough and recognised to have been invited to Obama's inauguration – was coming to Perth to reprise a role he had played all over the USA, so to have him come to work with meis mind blowing!”

“I always do my best to honour the playwright's intentions in whatever play I do. With Second Samuel I have a massive responsibility. Not because the playwright will be here but there are so many threads to the story, so many nuances and so many ways to do it. It would be easy to just play it as a comedy but it is so much more.”

Along with an outstanding Perth cast lineup and original music written and composed by Tommy Thompson, the Perth season of Second Samuel will no doubt be the first of many international seasons and high acclaim. Second Samuel will perform an exclusive season at the Subiaco Arts Centre from April 29 to May 8.

‘I stood at the side of the stage on the Friday night. My eyes got wider, my jaw hung slacker and my feet developed a mind of their own and danced along, outta control.’ ‘The Tent in the Tattersalls car park was pretty much reduced to smouldering rubble by the time Blue Shaddy had finished their set and I got the feeling that night that this is something this Surf-Funk Roots band does on a regular basis’- Sam Fell / Rhythms Magazine Oct 2007

****Music Oz Blues & Roots Award Winner 2007****
***Blues at Broadbeach Awards 2007 Best Instrumentalist, Belly McClelland***

Singer/songwriter and guitarist Jim McClelland, his brother Belly (harmonica) and Sandra (bass guitarist and wife of Jim) were born and bred in WA's remote wheat belt – a harshly beautiful environment complete with dust and flies, but with not a lot else to do but focus on their shared love of music. When you listen to Blue Shaddy’s songs you get a strong sense of where these three come from and it is very much apparent that their heart still lies in their country roots. Arunachala (known simply as Arun) Satgunasingam grew up in Kuala Lumpur, immersed in the sights and sounds of cultural and religious family events, where he would soak up the South Indian rhythms and street beats in a childhood that led him to end up studying at the Conservatorium of Music in Perth, studying contemporary percussion and Latin jazz.  Arun has played for artists of the calibre of Michael Franti, Jeff Martin, and acclaimed London beat maker Mark De Clive Lowe.

A chance meeting with Jim McClelland at a local music store in Perth led to Arun filling in for an absent Sandy at a few low-key acoustic gigs.  A friendship started, and from this point, Jim and Arun began to craft a new sound for Blue Shaddy – one that infused world beats and contemporary percussion into the Shaddy’s existing blues/ roots sound.
