Inaugural City of Swan Winter Arts Festival kicking off

The inaugural City of Swan Winter Arts Festival is about to kick off with Love, Lust and Revenge – Scenes from Shakespeare in Guildford’s Garrick Theatre on August 29 and 30.

This year four performances by WA Academy of Performing Arts students will be presented during August and September.

Love, Lust and Revenge is co-presented by City of Swan Libraries who will have a Shakespeare themed display in the Guildford Library, where pre-show supper will be served. Supper is at 6.30pm and is included in the ticket price.

UK Shakespearean expert Michael Jenn will direct Love, Lust and Revenge – Scenes from Shakespeare, which contains excerpts from all of the Bard’s best known comedies, histories and tragedies. School students studying Shakespeare are encouraged to take advantage of this exciting opportunity to see these scenes performed.

Swinging Rhythms - Big Band Style and Celebration! – the Broadway Musical in Cabaret will be held in the Midland Town Hall on September 6 and September 20 respectively.

The beautiful Midland Town Hall will be set up in cabaret style with tables and chairs, and patrons are encouraged to bring their own food and drink.

"Family Matters: One Act Season"

Presented by Stirling Players Inc.

Stirling Players presents an evening of three one act plays:

"Trust"
A Drama
Directed by Ines Tedesco
Assistant Director Elizabeth Jansen

A West Australian play written in 2000 by Edith Cowan University student Audra Standage.
It was first performed under a tree in Hyde Park in February 2001.

Set in North Queensland tropical rainforest.
Trust is about the relationship between two women who have known each other most of their lives.
But how well do they really know each other? And how well do they know the mysterious man
who calls himself the caretaker of the rainforest retreat where they are staying.
Is he what he claims to be? Can any of them trust each other?

"Bread"
A comedy written and directed by Nate Doherty

Once upon a time Mum awakens one morning to discover all the family bread she bought
has mysteriously vanished. Who is the culprit? her two sons or her husband?
And most importantly of all. Who will venture to the shops to get more?

A satirical look at bread and the modern family at its most petty.

"Chinamen"
A farce written by Michael Frayn
Directed by Barry Lefort

This is a one act comedy/farce of a dinner gone wrong.
A couple arrange a simple dinner party for their friends,
all should be well but things don't go as planned.
We see how a very funny series of events could happen to any one of us!

THE WA PREMIERE

"All Shook Up"

All Shook Up features the songs of Elvis in a celebration of his music
like you have never heard it before.

A young girl dreams of leaving a typical small town in the USA in the late 1950's.
A young man arrives to her town and not only encourages those dreams
but overcomes the selfishness of the townsfold and brings
a sweeping positive change ot the town and its residents.

Set in a small 1950s town where music, dancing and public affection have been outlawed
All Shook Up is based on the stories of 'Twelfth Night' and 'Footloose'.

When a roving roustabout comes to town everyone has a different response:
some think him an outlaw, some want to be him and others want to be loved by him.

As the town's residents are forced to re-evaluate their preconceptions the roustabout instigates
sweeping change, injecting music and love back into the lives of the townsfolk.

All Shook Up is one of the most entertaining musicals to have come from Broadway.
This show is a wildly entertaining romantic comedy filled with the wonderful ballads and rock'n'roll songs of Elvis. Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, Devil in Disguise, Can't Help Falling In Love With You are just a few of the Elvis songs featured in this show that will have your foot tapping all night long."

"It Could Be Any One of Us"

Presented by Harbour Theatre

Written by the master of comedy Alan Ayckbourn and directed by the talented
and experienced Pat Stroud, IT COULD BE ANY ONE OF US is Harbour Theatre’s fourth season for 2008.

An old dark house, a stormy night, a corpse, a number of suspects, a killer on the loose and a private sleuth hot on the trail. All the traditional ingredients for a good, old-fashioned edge-of-your-seat whodunit. Unfortunately, the sleuth in question has trouble even identifying the potential victim, let alone the suspects. As far as he's concerned, it could be any one of them, really...

In a remote and dilapidated country house, three siblings share an antagonistic life together with a problem teenager. All the siblings are artists who have failed to live up to their own, let alone anyone else’s, expectations. The older brother Mortimer (Peter Kirkwood) is a composer who has never realised his youthful potential, his sister Jocelyn (Nicola Bond) is a writer of thrillers who has never completed a novel and Brinton (John Forde) is a painter, who does not even let his family see his work. Jocelyn’s daughter Amy (Jade Craig) shares the house and seems determined to eat her way to happiness. When Jocelyn’s partner, Norris (Alan Kennedy) – an insurance investigator with aspirations to be a real detective – arrives home and interrupts a recital by Mortimer, a row breaks out in which Mortimer reveals he intends to disinherit the family and give the house to a former student, Wendy Jones (Francesca Meehan). Wendy visits the house and promptly survives three attempts on her life.

A storm and the old house conspire to terrify Wendy and Norris, their terror compounded when Mortimer enters with a mortal blow to the head. With the police unwilling to take Norris’s claims of murder seriously, he attempts to solve the murder pinpointing three suspects. The astonishingly inept Norris’s investigations end with a traditional thriller denouement in which he reveals the killer.
Of course, his investigations are completely wrong!

Director Pat Stroud says, “This, the 30th play from the pen of Alan Ayckbourn, conforms wickedly to almost all the conventions - preposterous plotting, slightly unreal, larger-than-life characters, even a stormy night with the wind rattling the latch. Almost everyone, even the amateur detective, has equal motivation and opportunity. In fact, it's all so ingeniously balanced that the villain can vary from one performance to the next, depending on the turn of a card. And with Ayckbourn, you're never even quite sure who was the victim.”

Why not have a meal at Clancy’s right next door to the theatre before the show?
Don’t forget to ask for your Harbour Theatre Meal Deal. What a great night out in Fremantle!

"The Little Grimley Trilogy"

Presented by Roleystone Theatre

The Little Grimley sagas have become a modern-day Theatrical phenomenon.
Rarely have one-act plays been gobbled up with such relish by amateur societies all over the world.

It started with LAST TANGO in which our four heroes battle
to save their ailing Am-Dram with a home-grown sex comedy.
It turned into an evening the locals would only forget after years of expensive counselling.

Then came LAST PANTO in which the prolific Gordon unveiled the world’s greatest pantomime
(Oh, no it wastn’t.)

And now, the querulous quartet finally try to tackle a Musical – Traditionally their achilles heel.
Well one of their many achilles heels, to be fair. This is a society with more weak heels
than a lame centipede. The odds are stacked against them- not just stacked,
but piled to the rafters, higher than a giant’s supermarket shelf in a clearance sale.

The locals who saw their last production are still in therapy and suing for psychological damage. What's more a rival society- and a very good one too- has set up on their doorstep,
and selling tickets like Hot Cakes. And they’re performing the same musical.
It all looks a little grim for Little Grimley, but it’s never over….Until the Fat Lady Sings.

All the fun starts on September 5th .
Tickets will sell very fast for this one so please Book Early.
Phone 9397-5730 for tickets.

"Lend Me A Tenor"

Presented by Rockingham Theatre Co.

A Rib Tickling Comedy

Rockingham Theatre, for their September 2008 Production, is presenting the hilarious Comedy/Farce “Lend Me A Tenor” by Ken Ludwig.

Set in 1934, the farce revolves around renowned tenor Tito Merelli,
known to his fans as "Il Stupendo," who is scheduled to sing the lead in Othello,
produced as a gala fundraiser for the Cleveland Opera Company.

Unfortunately, even before the star leaves his hotel room, everything begins to unravel.

Chaos ensues when a "Dear John" letter is left by his wife,
who has mistaken an autograph-seeker hidden in his closet for a secret lover.
The distraught Merelli accidentally is given a double dose of tranquilizers to calm him and passes out.

Saunders, the company's General Manager, is determined the show must go on
(for his own financial sake), so he enlists the aid of his assistant Max to impersonate the opera star.
Max is succeeding admirably . . . until Merelli awakens and heads for the stage.
What follows is a chain-reaction of confusion, plot twists, double entendres,
innuendoes, and constant entrances and exits through many doors.

Great entertainment and humour from start to finish.
This play when launched onto the world stages received many nominations and awards
and when it opened on Broadway it ran for 476 performances.

Rockingham Theatre has chosen a talented cast who we are confident will give you quality entertainment.

Playlovers Inc. presents

"Beauty & The Beast"

Directed by Susan Vincent
Musical Direction by Craig Dalton
Choreography by Zoe Jay

The Tony Award winning smash hit musical based on the Disney animated film version of the much loved fairytale.

Featuring the stunning Academy-Award winning musical score that made the animated film such a hit, plus another seven songs created for the Broadway show by master composer Alan Menken and lyricist Tim Rice, it is a classic tale of love, sacrifice, jealousy, revenge and redemption exploring an age-old theme: the true meaning of beauty.

Disney's Beauty and the Beast opened on Broadway in 1994 and has since become an international sensation that has played to over 17 million people worldwide.

Belle is a book-loving, inventor's daughter dissatisfied with life in a small provincial French town.
The Beast is a prince who because of his selfishness was placed under a spell to remain as a hideous beast unless he can gain redemption. To break the spell, he needs to learn to love another
and earn love in return before the last petal from his enchanted rose falls.

One of the longest-running shows in Broadway history, "Beauty and the Beast" was nominated for nine 1994 Tony® Awards including Best Musical. It's a tale as old as time, spun with magical moments and unforgettable characters like Gaston, the arrogant town Romeo; Cogsworth, the pompous clock; Lumiere, the love-struck candelabra, and the kindly teapot, Mrs. Potts. Adapted from the Academy Award-winning animated film, this production features musical favorites like the delightful "Belle", the show-stopping "Be Our Guest" and the Academy Award-winning title tune, "Beauty and the Beast".

The elaborate sets and props have been purchased from the Melbourne production,
and the lavish costumes have been hired from the same production.
Playlovers will present this exciting production at the Regal Theatre.

So Frenchy Productions presents

"Presence"

directed by Bruce Denny

Award winning Australian play, Presence by Patrick van der werf will receive
its Western Australian premiere in a unique production concept for three nights only at
the Fly By Night on September 17 - 19, followed by a presentation at the Studio at Subiaco Arts Centre on Friday and Saturday, September 19 and 21.

Winner of the 2002 Griffin Award for new playwriting and the Taffy Davis Memorial Award for
Best New Play, Presence explores social isolation and human frailties with warmth, humour and
a touch of Beckett. It has received great acclaim over east with influential critic Bryce Hallet
observing that “the play’s rambunctious tone and brittle wit makes its glimpses
of tender, wry affection all the more poignant.”

Presence is produced by ‘young turk’ outfit, So Frenchy Productions formed in 2007 with the objective to provide edgy, contemporary Australian theatre to wider audiences
by flinging theatre out in to the social and music corners of Perth.
The company had a great success with recent show, art.tensionseekers
with music from hot local band Schvendes.

Presence blends together a superb talented young cast, Kingsley Judd, Katya Shevtsov,
Sebastiano Gavasso, Bronwyn Pearson, Ben Brown
with musicians, Dan Russell (violin) and Brett Murray (keys/ electronics)
led by Music Director and composer Tristen Parr.

Director Bruce Denny said that Presence was an intricate and poignant play
that merged humour and compassion in an entertaining manner.
“This is not a play where you are expected to take home a message, just maybe a wider understanding of the frailty of people beneath their public exterior” he said.
“Its dark rooted drama is complemented by a sophisticated merge of art-rock aesthetics, classical strings and electronic soundscapes. Presence is entertainment which you won’t feel guilty about.”

Presence has been produced in support by Principle Partner Erceg Management,
and funding partners Department of Culture and the Arts, Mirvac and the Australian Business Arts Foundation through the WA Premier’s Arts Partnership Fund. Valued Partners include
the Fly By Night Musicians Club, Edith Cowan University, Robert Duval Foods and Feral Brewery.

Limelight Theatre presents

"The Importance of Being Ernest"

Limelight wild about being earnest

One of Oscar Wilde’s most popular works is Wanneroo Repertory’s next production.

The Importance of Being Earnest is a classic comedy which looks at fun, games and dubious ethics among the British upper crust.

Director James Hough Neilson says that although the play was first performed in 1895, Wilde’s witty dialogue and his social commentary on the hypocrisy of Victorian England are still relevant today.

“Sadly, it was his last play, as by this time the scandal over Wilde’s relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas was about to become public,” said Hough Neilson.

“While the scandal caused the play’s first production to close after just 83 performances, the quality of the play has ensured that has continued to amuse and entertain ever since.”

Wilde’s take on the mores and morals of the upper class centre on Algernon Moncrieff (played by Andrew Symes), a slightly shady but charming gentleman from a wealthy family who has a bad habit of throwing his money away.

Algernon has a close friend Jack Worthing (Tim Fraser), a self-made man who acts as a ward to his cousin, a beautiful young lady named Cecily (Emma Shaw).

Algernon has created an alter ego to help him get out of tight spots brought on by his financial improprieties, and when he learns that Jack has created a false identity of his own - Ernest a brother living in London whose exploits have earned him no small amount of notoriety - Algernon arrives for a weekend visit in the country posing as the mysterious Ernest.

Having heard of Ernest's misadventures many times over the years, Cecily had developed something of an infatuation with the lovable rogue, and Algernon's impersonation of him works no small degree of magic on Cecily.

Meanwhile, Algernon's cousin. Gwendolyn (Susannah Devenish), arrives for the weekend and is startled to discover Jack is also there - except that she knows him as bad-boy Ernest.

Also featured in the production are David Nelson, George McCabe, Peter Shaw, Mark Nuttall, Maureen Barnett and Marie Corrigan.

The Importance of Being Earnest is on at the Limelight Theatre in Civic Drive, Wanneroo on various dates from 25 September to 11 October.

"Suddenly At Home"

An Intriguing Thriller by Francis Durbridge
Directed by Brenda Stanley

Melville Theatre Company will present the intriguing thriller by Francis Durbridge, Suddenly at Home.
This is not so much of a who-dunnit, but a will-he–get-away-with-it!
Described as a rollercoater of a thriller with twist after turn after twist,
this play will keep you guessing until the surprise ending!

When Glen Howard decides to get rid of his wealthy wife he works out a foolproof plan
involving his wife’s former  lover Sam , a detective story writer.
The plan involves the co-operation of his girl-friend, Sheila who proves less than up to the task.
With the unexpected arrival on the scene of the formidable Remick to assist in the investigation
of Maggie’s mysterious death however Glen’s plans begin to unravel.

To tell you any more would spoil the story so come along and be intrigued until the final moments of this fast paced detective story from the creator of the famous Paul Temple series of radio plays. Francis Durbridge was a prolific writer of detective stories and plays and wrote largely for the BBC.

Director Brenda Stanley (A Passionate Woman at Melville in 2007) has assembled a fine cast
to do justice to this thriller with a difference. Jeff Hansen fresh from directing A Marriage Proposal will play Glen, Kylie Calwell (Night, Mother) is Maggie, Felicty May is Helen, Maggie’s sister, Olivia Darby (Pride & Predjudice) is Sheila, Sherrilee Walsh (usually seen at Harbour Theatre) is Ruth, the au pair, Lewis Johnson (A Passionate Woman) is Sam Blaine with Norman Heath as Inspector Appleton and newcomer to Melville Stephan Koczian is the mysterious Remick
.

To those of an 'older generation' the name of the playwright will immediately bring to mind
the series of radio plays, the Paul Temple mysteries.
This series ran for years in the UK and 'Paul Temple' is probably the most famous
- and certainly long-running detective in radio history!

Featuring: Jeff Hansen, Kylie Calwell, Felicity May, Olivia Darby, Sherrilee Walsh,
Lewis Johnson, Norm Heath, Stephan Koczian.
