Harbour Theatre presents

"On Golden Pond"
by Ernest Thompson
Directed by Trevor Dhu

Harbour Theatre presents the romantic comedy by Ernest Thompson On Golden Pond, directed by Trevor Dhu.

This is the love story of Ethel and Norman Thayer, who are returning to their summer home on Golden Pond for the forty-eighth year. He is a retired professor, nearing eighty, with heart palpitations and a failing memory—but still as tart-tongued, observant and eager for life as ever. Ethel, ten years younger, and the perfect foil for Norman, delights in all the small things that have enriched and continue to enrich their long life together.

They are visited by their divorced, middle-aged daughter and her dentist fiancé, who then go off to Europe, leaving his teenage son behind for the summer. The boy quickly becomes the 'grandchild' the elderly couple have longed for, and as Norman revels in taking his ward fishing and thrusting good books at him, he also learns some lessons about modern teenage awareness—and slang—in return.

In the end, as the summer wanes, so does their brief idyll, and in the final, deeply moving moments of the play, Norman and Ethel are brought even closer together by the incidence of a mild heart attack. Time, they know, is now against them, but the years have been good and, perhaps, another summer on Golden Pond still awaits.

Presented to great critical and popular acclaim first off then on Broadway, this touching, funny and warmly perceptive study of a spirited and lovable elderly couple facing their twilight years introduced a significant playwright to our theatre.

'On Golden Pond is a work of rare simplicity and beauty, and in Thompson our theatre has found a fresh new voice.' —NY Daily News.
'…a rare and memorable theatrical experience…' —Variety
'What courage it must have taken for Mr. Thompson in the 1970s to write a play with so much affection in it!' —The New Yorker

Phoenix Theatre Inc and Dark Psychic Productions present

A Dark Horror Comedy
"Maul of the Dead"

by Mitch Brian
Directed by Jayde Clark and Shaun Griffin

Beware: Zombies lumber into Phoenix Theatre, Memorial Hall for 'Maul of the Dead'

It’s the era of flairs and disco music and zombies walk the earth. As the ravenous hoards attack the frail security gate separating the living from the walking dead in this shopping centre from hell!

The survivors make a desperate bid for weapons and supplies, eventually forming a makeshift family. Paradise is short-lived as betrayal, false identities and infection threaten the belief that ‘there’s got to be a morning after.’

Danger lurks behind every mannequin in a play that blends horror, satire and melodrama with punk rock and disco music into ‘a whirlwind of zombie mayhem.’

This show is suitable for 12years plus. This show contains horror themes, stage combat and some blood.

Kathleen Uhlmann, Chris Northover, Glenn Scott, Beth Krapljanov, Molly Kerr, Kelsie Anderson, Anthony Smith, Pat McMahon, Sheryl Gale

Stage Left Theatre Troupe presents

To Be Sure It's As Sweet As
A One Act Seasion

Featuring: "Good Luck Father Ted" and "The Private War of Corporal Cooper"

To be sure.. It's as sweet as!

An international flavour and some striking solo performances have all been thrown into the mix for the upcoming season of short plays by Stage Left Theatre Troupe in Boulder.

Headlining the bill is a very funny comedy which has been inspired by a popular TV show, along with a fantastic World War 2 drama and..... a collection of monologues, which will be performed in a special setting during the intermission.

"The Private War of Corporal Cooper" marks the directing debut for Stage Left member Kelly George, and is a play written by a New Zealand playwright and set during World War One.

Sister Mary Bartholomew is a Catholic nun who is knitting socks for the war effort. She decides to place a note in one of them with her name and address.

The message reaches a very young Corporal, by name of Johnny Cooper who is with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force in France.  Corporal Cooper writes back and a friendship is struck up.

Following this dramatic performance, a series of monologues by talented performers of all ages will then be staged in a unique setting. The monologues include drama, Shakespeare, comedy and poignancy.

Then to round out the evening, proud Irish national Charlene Pringle is presenting "Good Luck Father Ted", a play adapted from episodes of the popular television hit comedy.

Three Roman Catholic priests Father Ted Crilly, young and naïve Father Dougal McGuire and old and drunken Father Jack Hackett live chaotically together in a parish on the fictional Craggy Island, located off the west coast of Ireland.

They have been sent there as punishment for different incidents in their past and are now living in the parochial house, along with their housekeeper Mrs Doyle, who always wants to serve them tea.

The comedy focuses on the quirky characters, some of their antics and the constant miserable weather on Craggy Island.

A special matinee on Sunday May 19th will include a fund raising afternoon tea as part of the "Biggest Morning Tea" events which annually raise money for cancer.

Old Mill Theatre presents

"Born Yesterday"
A Comedy by Garson Kanin
Directed by Noel O'Neill

Born again: fresh take on 1940s comedy about Washington corruption

COMEDY, corruption and sexy 1940s charm come to the Old Mill Theatre this June in the play Born Yesterday.

Written by Garson Kanin – responsible for many Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn films – it follows the uncouth, corrupt and rich junk dealer Harry Brock and what happens when he brings his showgirl mistress Billie Dawn to Washington DC.

After realising it was a mistake, Brock hires a journalist to educate Billie so she stays out of the way, which proves to be another misstep.

Billie realises the extent of Brock’s corruption and interferes with his plans to bribe a congressman into passing legislation that would allow his business to make more money.

After being a major Broadway success, Born Yesterday was adapted into a 1950 film with Judy Holliday who scored an Academy Award for playing Billie.

The play experienced successful Broadway revivals in 1989 and 2011 and was again made into a film in 1993 with Melanie Griffith, John Goodman and Don Johnson.

Director Noel O’Neill said Born Yesterday appealed to him because of its themes of corruption within a comedy.

“I like the comedic brute force and ignorance of the Harry Brock character and the Pymaglion-esque quality of Billie Dawn,” he said.

“For those that don’t know, Pygmalion is a George Bernard Shaw play the musical My Fair Lady was based on and Billie has a similar Eliza Doolittle transformation.”

Born in Ireland, O’Neill moved to New York in his late teens and studied acting with Lee Strasberg and Herbert Berghof, appearing in many off-Broadway productions including One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest and Of Mice and Men.

Since moving to Perth 12 years ago, he has appeared on stage and directed and written numerous shows for the Old Mill and KADS Theatres, Graduate Dramatic Society and the Irish Theatre Players.

O’Neill has won numerous awards for writing, directing and currently lectures for the WA Academy of Performing Arts and Perth Actors’ Collective, also writing and directing the Old Mill Theatre’s most recent show No Bed of Roses.

“The main challenge with Born Yesterday is taking the actors back to the 1940s and early 1950s because the characters are the sort we rarely see today and the dialogue is different,” he said.

“The play also demands lots of energy from the actors because they are all very well-written character roles.”

Garrick Theatre Company presents

"Project Macbeth"
Written by Simon Sharkey
Director : Rob Whitehead

Political intrigue has not changed much from 400 years ago in Shakespeare's time or 500 years before that in historical Macbeth’s time. The modern story of Gillard and Rudd is a replay of Whitlam and Fraser which is an echo of Macbeth and Duncan with Shakespeare as the ultimate spin doctor, rewriting history to suit the powers that be of the time.

Macbeth-hero or villain? This play written by Simon Sharkey for the National Theatre of Scotland, attempts to let the real Macbeth speak for himself. Yet what do we really know about him apart from what Shakespeare tells us? Shakespeare’s “Macbeth” echoes across the centuries as an all powerful pervading myth that eats away at reality. What chance does the real man have of telling his story when confronted by this amorphous monster?

In this retelling, the real battle is not with Duncan but with Shakespeare's play itself, as Macbeth, all but subsumed by the myth, struggles to be heard.

In 500 years time how are our current politicians going to be remembered? Will they be?

Groovy Boots Theatre proudly presents

John Birmingham's
"He Died with a Felafel in His Hand"

Stage adaption by Simon Bedak, Steve Le Marquand and Michael Neaylon
Directed by Phil Barnett and Chris Thomas

The hugely successful 1990s cult novel He Died with a Felafel in His Hand comes to the Perth stage this June, exploring the madness of sharing house with the good, the bad and the ugly. Well, mainly bad and ugly.

Described as “one of the funniest Australian novels ever written” with sales of more than 300,000 copies, He Died with a Felafel in His Hand also has the record of the longest-running stage play in Australian history.

Not seen in Perth since its WA debut 10 years ago, the playwrights have updated their script to give it a local feel, meaning this version has never been seen before.

Groovy Boots Theatre is bringing it to life, taking the show back to its pub origins by staging it at The Flying Scotsman’s Velvet Lounge in Mount Lawley. As author John Birmingham says: “It gets funnier the more beer you have while watching it.”

Please note: this is a strictly adults-only event that contains coarse language, adult themes, simulated drug use, nudity, sexual references and scenes.

Featuring:
Steve Hounsome, Sarah Christiner, Murray Jackson, Josh Crane, Molly Kerr, Krysia Wiechecki, Nicole Miller, Cath Jennings, Taylor Russert, Phil Barnett, Chris Thomas, Sophie Joske, Chris Greenwood, Katie Cameron

Phoenix Theatre Inc and Laughing Horse Productions proudly presents

Gilbert & Sullivan's
"Pirates of Penzance"

Music by Arthur Sullivan
Liberetto by W.S. Gilbert
Directed by Adam Salathiel

The Pirates of Penzance; or, The Slave of Duty is a comic opera in two acts, with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert. The opera's official premiere was at the Fifth Avenue Theatre in New York City on 31 December 1879, where the show was well received by both audiences and critics. Its London debut was on 3 April 1880, at the Opera Comique, where it ran for a very successful 363 performances, having already been playing successfully for over three months in New York.

The story concerns Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. He meets Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and the two young people fall instantly in love.

Frederic finds out, however, that he was born on 29 February, and so, technically, he only has a birthday each leap year. His apprenticeship indentures state that he remains apprenticed to the pirates until his 21st birthday, and so he must serve for another 63 years.

Bound by his own sense of duty, Frederic's only solace is that Mabel agrees to wait for him faithfully.

Featuring:
Peter 'Pear' Carr, James Hynson, Shania Eliassen, Sheryl Gale, Paul Treasure, Darren Bilston, Russell Baxter, Danni Close, Catherine Motteram, Crystal Suche.

SPECIAL EVENT – MATT TAYLOR REMEMBERS WHEN HE WAS YOUNG

The Icon of Australian Blues Music takes you on a unique 3hr journey with great story’s and music.

Blues to Oz Blues MATT TAYLOR remembering when he was young.

The South West Blues Club will be given over to a very special and exclusive evening.
National treasure, Matt Taylor will take to the stage in a one-off epic solo journey that tells the very personal story of his career and the evolution of blues in this country.

“I will be telling my life story,’ explains the vintage bluesman. “And my life story is pretty much the story of the blues in Australia.”

Taylor has been wowing audiences for over 40 years with his brand of Australian rhythm and blues and it is time his fascinating story was told. The format of the three-hour show is part story-telling and part music. This is something that not only should no blues aficionado miss but something that anyone who has any interest in Australian music history at all should not miss either.

“It is a story that needs to be told and there are not many old enough to tell it,” he chuckles.

“It is about my experiences. True blues is your experience,” he continues. “It is useless me singing about cotton fields as I have never seen one!

“The blues hasn’t stopped evolving and it hasn’t evolved in isolation. For it to work, it has to be what you are feeling and thinking now.

“Apart from that it is just a fun little story really.”
