Gina Yashere (UK)
PLUS Support Acts

GINA YASHERE has become one of the most recognizable and sought after comics in the UK. A storming performance on American TV’s LAST COMIC STANDING, led to GINA becoming the first British comic to appear on HBO’s DEF COMEDY JAM. As a result GINA has found herself the toast of the Hollywood Hills and is currently based Stateside.

GINA YASHERE’S
sell-out live appearances are legendary. Her, bombastic delivery, infectious personality and cheeky observations have wowed audiences not just in the UK but also in America, Dubai, Hong Kong, Singapore, South Africa and all over Europe.

Best described as fast, fresh and hilarious, Gina Yashere show is packed with inspired jokes, infectious wit and razor-sharp observations on such subjects as losing 35 kg in weight, self administered colonic irrigations, moving from the UK to the USA and her Nigerian roots!

Never backward in coming forward, the comedienne who hails from London via Nigeria, shoots from the hip. Her unique take on being both cultural insider and outsider never fails to raise the roof.

Following an early career as a Lift Engineer, YASHERE made her comedy debut at The Edinburgh Festival in 1995. The shows sold out almost immediately and overnight both audiences and critics alike were smitten.

Since those early heady days GINA has continued to take the comedy world by storm and is now one of the most highly sought - after comics in the country, making numerous appearances on Television, radio and the big screen.

Her TV appearances have included
THE LENNY HENRY SHOW JO BRAND ‘S HOT POTATOES, THE CROUCHES, THE STAND-UP SHOW and CELEBRITY FAME ACADEMY

Radio shows have ranged from her own BBC Radio London show to Radio 2’s critically acclaimed THE POWDER ROOM. Feature films include KISS KISS and MR IN BETWEEN.

She has appeared on the West-End stage in THE VAGINA MONOLOGUES and written several plays and sketches for the BBC. GINA is currently based in the US. Her most recent US TV appearance was alongside Lewis Black and Robin Williams

Jason Ayres - "Chasing Ghosts" CD Launch - 1st August

Jason Ayres

"Chasing Ghosts" CD Launch

There are two kinds of people in this world. Those who have discovered Jason Ayres. And those who are just about to.

Influenced by the rhythmic pop of John Mayer, the vocal stylings of Jess Buckley and the finesse of Coldplay, Jason Ayres is a West Australian based singer-songwriter who delivers a unique brand of acoustic based pop tunes.

After the smashing success of his debut acoustic EP "Acoustic Sessions", Jason Ayres follows up with his bigger, better and bolder pop-rock release "Chasing Ghosts". By bringing in the experience and talents of Ric Eastman on drums (Lucky Oceans, Hank Marvin, Dave Hole) and Jon Ryder on bass (Vdelli, John Meyer), the recording was given a driving rhythm which holds its own underneath the catchy pop melodies which are strewn throughout the disc.

Having performed in One Movement Festival, which included artists like Kate-Miller Heidke, Sara Blasco, Dallas Frasca and many other big names, and alongside James Cruikshank (The Cruel Sea) and Perth favourites Nathan Gaunt, Toby & Code Red, Saritah and many more, Jason has had the opportunity to develop his own style and energy on stage. Always being faithful to the songs, himself and his listeners.

His latest CD "Chasing Ghosts" is out now. Available on iTunes, direct from his website and independent record stores.

"...a charismatic and sincere performer who delivers quality songs." - Drum Media (Australia)

CD Launch : Sunday 1st August 2010 - 2pm. Subiaco Arts Centre, 180 Hamersley Rd, Subiaco.
- Full Band Show - special guest Jessica Hewett.

The Brainbox Project presents

Cabaret Soiree Carnivale

Sizzling hot new cabaret with international, national and local acts to blow you away!

Let our new mysterious ring master crack her whip and get the party started.  We have a host of stunning performers paying tribute to some of the legends of the music world including: Edith Piaf, the 60’s Diva groups, Jazz and Blues classics, The Lennon and McCartney Songbook, Bette Midler, Marlene Dietrich, Tom Lehrer, comedy performances and more.

Cabaret Soiree Carnivale commences -  direct from France, Caroline Nin performing Thursday 1, Friday 2  & Saturday 3 July in Hymne a Piaf , a tribute to the legendary Edith Piaf.  This cabaret is not an impersonation, but a homage by a fellow Parisian Chanteuse. She delivers the famous anthems such as La vie en Rose, Hymne à l’amour and Padam in her smoky jazz inflected tone.  After sellout seasons at the Sydney Opera House and Adelaide Cabaret Festival, Nin comes to Perth to draw the audience into the uplifting and tragic world of Edith Piaf.

CoverGirls are local galsCaitlin Beresford-Ord, Sharon Wisniewski and Clare Moore performing 8, 9 & 10 July in Rhapsody in Red. They will tease, cajole and spank the songs of delicious 50 and  60’s divas Diana, Tina, Shirley, Aretha and more. Coo toBaby Love, lick your lips for Lollipop, beg for Please Mr Postman and run if you have Lipstick on Your Collar.

Cabaret Soiree Carnivale not only debuts all genres of music but includes the very best in Australian comedy. Fresh from sold out shows at Melbourne’s Midsumma Festival, Adelaide’s Cabaret Festival and Sydney’s Mardi Gras, comedian/pianist Phil Scott teams up with dynamic singer/actor and WAAPA graduate Vincent Hooper in The Twink and The Showgirl, 15, 16 & 17 July.  This fast moving hilarious musical show examines the differences and similarities between two generations of gay men.  Expect a few parodies, some good old show tunes, pop songs, eye candy, ear candy, hot piano and loads of laughs.

Victoria Newton is thrilled to return to Perth after many years in the UK, where she was recognised as one the most exciting and dynamic jazz vocalists on the scene.  Her unique versatility mixes a solid command of the jazz repertoire with a love of Brazilian music. Her cabaret show 22, 23 & 24 July is called The Poetry of Love: From Implicit to Explicit and is an exploration of sexual innuendo used in some of the most famous jazz standards such as Fats Waller's Honey Suckle Rose and Cole Porter’s Love For Sale.

Coming from Melbourne are three of Australia’s top cabaret performers Melissa Langton, Libby O’Donovan & Mark Jones.  Think of any of the major musicals in the last decade and we can guarantee these artistes have sung in them all.  There’s something for everyone in The Great Liverpudlian Songbook –  and this multi award winning cabaret trio serve it up with their trademark offbeat humour and a healthy dose of the hottest three part harmonies on the planet! Everyone’s Got Something to Hide (except for me & my monkey) is on 29, 30 & 31 July.

Enjoy the comedic delights of Melbourne comedian Anthony Menchetti (NBC’s Last Comic Standing) direct from critically acclaimed seasons on the Australian and International comedy circuits. He stars in Gay Conversion School Dropout, 5, 6 & 7 August, which tells the story of one man’s journey to find spiritual peace within the conflicting worlds of religion and sexuality.

Critically acclaimed Perth cabaret singer Julia Jenkins channels the explosive energy of Divine Miss M in an outrageous homage to this music legend. Complete with a four-piece band, Jenkins takes you on a no-holds-barred, full-throttle ride through 25 Bette Midler classics including Miss Otis Regrets, The Rose, Do You Wanna Dance, Glory Of Love and From A Distance. This electrifying show called Taking Liberties: A Divine Bette Midler Experience is on 12, 13 & 14 August.

In a Perth Premiere a young and energetic local cast consisting of Louisa Fitzhardinge, Izaak Lim, Nick Maclaine, Clint Strindberg and Andrew Williams, bring the witty satirical world of Tom Lehrer to the stage in Tomfoolery 19, 20 & 21 August. Tomfoolery, is a musical revue of songs full of wit, class and social commentary, featuring songs such as Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, The Masochism Tango, When You Are Old and Grey, The Irish Ballad and The Vatican Rag.

Local indigenous singer and WAMi award winner Gina Williams shares her life story in this poignant and moving cabaret.  Gina was born in Perth and adopted out when she was a baby. She found out late in life that she was Aboriginal, her birth mother had links to the Balladong Noongar people and to the Kija group in the East Kimberley. Gina will make you laugh at her stories, think about her messages, and as you let your guard down she blows you away with her divine voice. A very special cabaret 26, 27 & 28 August.

A host of local talent - Brendan Hanson, Julia Jenkins, Sharon Wisniewski and Shai Yammanee feature  in Le Grand Review, 2, 3 & 4 September.   Our Emcee with attitude (and a whip) Queen B and her children of the night will take you on a kooky, crazy and downright outrageous night – rock and roll style – from Gaga to Guns and Roses, Queen to Florence and the Machine, nothing is sacred and everything will spin like a disco ball in Le Grand Chapiteau.

And there’s more local talent with cabaret artist Analisa Bell who will have you in stitches as she takes a closer look at the life of Australia’s most outrageous socialite, Rosie Portelou* in GOLD-DIGGER, The Shags to Riches Story Of Australia’s Iron Whore.  From her days in the Philippines, to her infamous marriage to mining magnate Sam Bankock*, and then of course Billy.* This tongue in cheek cabaret runs 9, 10 & 11 September. (*Please note any similarities in character or story to existing people are purely coincidental).

Finally we end Carnivale with an original cabaret written and performed by one of Perth’s most talented and respected professional jazz vocalists Ali Bodycoat.  Minor Major Marlene, 16, 17 & 18 September, is a sumptuous and intelligent glimpse into the astonishing 65-year career of Marlene Dietrich.  Bodycoat captures the charm, wit and severity of the original queen of reinvention with her exceptional vocal ability and poignant stage presence.

Groovy Boots Theatre presents

"Dimboola"

You’re invited to the wedding of the year… on stage!

GROOVY Boots Theatre is bringing an Australian classic to the stage this October with Jack Hibberd’s highly-popular play Dimboola.

Set at an Australian country wedding in the late 1960s, two families have a little too much to drink at the celebrations – and a variety of spontaneous songs, insults and fisticuffs are the result.

Directed by Phil Barnett and Chris Thomas, the two have set up Groovy Boots Theatre as an independent production company to bring Dimboola to life as a professional show.

Thomas performed in Dimboola 17 years ago and believed the time was right for a new audience to experience it.

“There’s something so quintessentially Australian about Dimboola and the way it portrays how families react to each other at weddings,” he said.

“Weddings have the capacity to bring out the worst in people, despite the fact they’re supposed to be happy occasions, as old family feuds, jealousies and rivalries are brought to life – usually helped along by alcohol.

Dimboola is obviously an exaggeration of what can happen but given it was written more than 40 years ago, it still holds up today as a mirror of real life.”

Barnett said the motivation behind Groovy Boots Theatre and Dimboola was to “try something different”.

“It’s said that more Australians have seen Dimboola than any other musical, comedy or play in the past 40 years and it’s a play that really does embrace audience involvement.

“Given the wedding setting, the audience is incorporated as if they’re part of the reception, also receiving a three-course meal as the play progresses through the evening.”

While a bowling club may not be a traditional venue for theatre performances, Thomas and Barnett believe it suits Dimboola perfectly.

“Country weddings are often held in town halls, RSL clubs and similar venues, so the Victoria Park Bowling Club is an ideal setting for show,” Thomas said.

“You wouldn’t be able to set out the audience as part of the wedding reception if it was done in a traditional theatre venue.”

Old Mill Theatre presents

"Away"

Get yourself Away to the theatre

A QUINTESSENTIALLY Australian story, mixing drama, humour and home truths, is the latest offering from the Old Mill Theatre this August.

Written by Michael Gow and directed by Vanessa Jensen, Away is the story of three different families who go on their annual Christmas holidays in late 1967, all burdened with their own baggage.

“It’s a beautiful Australian play with wonderfully-written characters,” Jensen said. “The language, setting and story are undeniably Australian.

“During the course of the story, a storm ends up bringing the families together, helping them to unload some of their baggage.”

Attracted to the play for its simplicity, Jensen said Away also has a lot of depth and is easily accessible with a moving story.

“I saw a professional production at the Hole in Wall Theatre in the late 1980s, which was excellent, but most people have only seen school productions of Away,” she said.

“While these are often very good, a lot of the depth of character and story are lost when all roles are played by 16-year-olds – I wanted to see it again with adults in the adult roles!”

Jensen has a wealth of theatre experience behind her, after first appearing on stage as an eight-year-old and directing her first show at 14.

She wrote, directed, stage managed and acted in various shows at Curtin University’s Hayman Theatre over a four-year period and has staged several successful productions at the Old Mill and Melville Theatres, including The Venetian Twins, Three Tall Women, Pride and Prejudice and her own award-winning script Jamie’s Chooks.

One of the main challenges Jensen faces with Away is the fact that many people have already studied the script at school.

“While this can mean full houses for the show, it can also mean pre-conceived ideas about how it should be staged,” she said.

“The play comes across as sounding deceptively simple but it’s actually a complex and richly-textured story with many layers and meanings.

“One of the things I love about Away is its use of, and parallels with, Shakespeare, which helps to make it unique.

“That shouldn’t put people off, however, because the play is extremely accessible – it’s just one of the many layers Michael Gow has used in his script.”

Darlington Theatre Players present

"Are You Being Served?"

a rollicking comedy by Jeremy Lloyd & Andrew Croft
directed by Ann Hopwell

Not a lot needs to be written about this as it is so well known. Briefly the story line is the store is being prepared for the sale of German goods. Young Mr. Grace is sending the much loved staff on a summer vacation to Spain to a one star hotel, where mayhem prevails, with the tropical heat, randy revolutionaries, Spanish crumpet and giant woof ‘n’ poofs.

Is this going to be too much for our happy band? Not a bit of it! With the aid of a nun’s habit, a bowler hat and Mrs. Slocomb’s Union Jack knickers, they survive their holiday with everything intact but their modesty.

This is a glorious mixture of over-the-top characters, double entendres, sexual innuendos and a bit of slap-stick thrown in for good measure!

Featuring:
Ray Condy, Russell Carter, Kirsty MacDonald, Callan Kneale, Geoff Rumsey, Keith Scrivens, Anita Bound, Justin Stevens, Raymond Morrison, Rachael Morgan, Adrian Ashman.

Harbour Theatre presents

"Ladies Day"

by Amanda Whittington
directed by Peter Kirkwood

Work, love and life are one hard slog for the fish-filleting foursome Pearl, Jan, Shelley and Linda. Their luck changes when Linda finds tickets to Ladies’ Day at Royal Ascot in York.  Out go the hairnets, wellies and overalls and on go the frocks, fascinators and stilettos, as the girls tart themselves up and head off for a drink, a flirt and a flutter for a day at the races they will never forget.

Once there the foursome, themselves fish out of water, make the most of this once in a lifetime opportunity to mix it with posh folk.  As the day unfolds, the champagne flows, secrets spill out and their horses keep winning.  By the last race, the girls are on course for a life-changing win.

Those rich blokes and exotic holidays could be theirs for the taking but their posh day at the races doesn’t turn out quite as they had planned as echoes from the past come back to haunt them.

This is exuberant and contemporary comedy at its best, directed by one of Community Theatre’s most experienced and awarded directors Peter Kirkwood.

Kirkwood says “I chose LADIES’ DAY because it is full of the north of England humour that everyone can identify with.  Coming from this area myself I have an in-depth knowledge of the trials and tribulations of every day life and hence know exactly how these women would react to a chance to escape the drudgery of their everyday lives.”

Ann Speicher who plays Pearl says “this play is very, very funny but touching as well.  All the characters are multi-faceted and therefore challenging for the actors. Pearl in particular has to face the ghosts from her past which will touch a chord with everyone.  I am thrilled to be playing this part. ”

Kirkwood continues “the four ladies all have different ambitions from the would-be-if-she-could-be Shelley, the soon to retire Pearl, the warm hearted Jan to Linda who apparently has the mother from hell.  As the play develops and they meet the different characters on the race-course, they give the audience a glimpse of their lives beyond the fish factory with some surprising outcomes.”

Featuring:
Ann Speicher, Tina Barker, Sherrilee Walsh, Jade Craig, Michael Dornan, Andy Markland and Cein Byrne.

Stirling Players presents

Hush Little Baby - One Act Season
"The Children of the Black Skirt"
"Mandy"
"Hush Little Celia, Don't Say A Word"

Events will take a dramatic turn when Stirling Players Inc brings its latest production season to the stage. Hush Little Baby... is a collection of three moving and thought-provoking One Act plays that will be playing at the Stirling Theatre for a limited run from this August.

After a series of light-hearted comedic plays so far this year, Hush Little Baby... is ensured to change the mood on the stage and captivate Stirling audiences in a new light.

The Children of the Black Skirt by Angela Betizen and directed by Peta Flanigan is a gothic fairytale that follows the history of Australia through the spirits of children who have lived in an orphanage from convict times, through to World War Two, the Stolen Generation and beyond.

Local playwright and director Peter Flanigan will present one of his own short plays entitled Mandy. This is a moving drama that alternates between the present and the past in following the memories of a woman going through a psychological crisis.

Brendan Ellis and Joel Horwood are two young directors who together will be bringing Joseph Wallace’s play Hush Little Celia, Don’t Say a Word to the stage. This is a beautiful piece about a girl with selective mutism, and the boy who tries to get to know her.

Stirling Players Production Manager Grace Vagliviello says that this is a special season for the club in a number of ways. “Our selection committee have recognised that Stirling Players audiences do enjoy more contemporary theatre and we wanted to present a season that not only catered to that, but celebrated our own younger members and gave them an opportunity to bring work to our stage.”

"Double Diagnosis"

a psychological thriller written and directed by Alice Dale

Kalamunda Dramatic Society proudly presents the psychological thriller Double Diagnosis written and directed by professional actress Alice Dale at the Town Square Theatre commencing Friday July 16.

It’s Halloween night; a young woman arrives at the home of Dr & Mrs Prothero. Dressed in a muddy man’s suit, she seems to be suffering from total amnesia.

Marjorie, who has lost a daughter, immediately ‘adopts’ her as her own. Jack is not convinced the girl’s ‘amnesia’ is genuine.

A TV newsflash of an attack (which becomes a murder) in a nearby flat, from which a girl is missing, alarms Jack. He wants to call the police. Marjorie protects the girl and confrontation results.

Their psychiatrist son, Graham, reveals the girl is a mentally disturbed patient and the plot thickens, leading to an unexpected ending when DI McGrath appears on the scene.

First produced at the Effie Crump Theatre in 1997, Dale has since rewritten this dramatic thriller several times to reach its full theatrical pinnacle.

Dale says, “The play deals with some very controversial subjects. I’m sure the audience will have their own unique opinions. I’ve expressed some of mine, but at the same time have allowed the audience the room to have their own.”

Not one for doing things by halves, Dale carried out thorough and extensive research for this play, “All psychiatric information has been accepted as accurate.”

Dale continues, “If Double Diagnosis stimulates discussion after the show, that will be a sign that the audience has been involved with the characters and their unusual situations.”

Featuring:
Andrew Warwick, Jacqui Warner, Krysia Wiechechi, Peter Clark and Neil Millican.

‘I stood at the side of the stage on the Friday night. My eyes got wider, my jaw hung slacker and my feet developed a mind of their own and danced along, outta control.’ ‘The Tent in the Tattersalls car park was pretty much reduced to smouldering rubble by the time Blue Shaddy had finished their set and I got the feeling that night that this is something this Surf-Funk Roots band does on a regular basis’- Sam Fell / Rhythms Magazine Oct 2007

****Music Oz Blues & Roots Award Winner 2007****
***Blues at Broadbeach Awards 2007 Best Instrumentalist, Belly McClelland***

Singer/songwriter and guitarist Jim McClelland, his brother Belly (harmonica) and Sandra (bass guitarist and wife of Jim) were born and bred in WA's remote wheat belt – a harshly beautiful environment complete with dust and flies, but with not a lot else to do but focus on their shared love of music. When you listen to Blue Shaddy’s songs you get a strong sense of where these three come from and it is very much apparent that their heart still lies in their country roots. Arunachala (known simply as Arun) Satgunasingam grew up in Kuala Lumpur, immersed in the sights and sounds of cultural and religious family events, where he would soak up the South Indian rhythms and street beats in a childhood that led him to end up studying at the Conservatorium of Music in Perth, studying contemporary percussion and Latin jazz.  Arun has played for artists of the calibre of Michael Franti, Jeff Martin, and acclaimed London beat maker Mark De Clive Lowe.

A chance meeting with Jim McClelland at a local music store in Perth led to Arun filling in for an absent Sandy at a few low-key acoustic gigs.  A friendship started, and from this point, Jim and Arun began to craft a new sound for Blue Shaddy – one that infused world beats and contemporary percussion into the Shaddy’s existing blues/ roots sound.
